Video: Raila Accuses KDF Of Smuggling Sugar Into The Country

CORD leader Raila Odinga has accused the Kenya Defence Forces of smuggling sugar into the country.

Odinga said that the officers bring the sugar into the country through the port of Kismayu.

Speaking in Voi, Odinga questioned the origin of sugar sold in supermarkets branded with the supermarkets' names.

Odinga was launching the DATU Sawazisha Fund; a county fund aimed at enabling young entrepreneurs acquire affordable loans for development, The Star reports.

In what raised mixed reactions with the residents attending the launch, Odinga stated his suspicions, by questioning where the supermarkets got the sugar yet they are not millers.

The alleged sugar deal with Uganda has become the latest bone of contention pitting the government against the opposition.

Since the return of Uhuru from a state visit in Uganda after which reports emerged that he had made a deal to import sugar from Uganda, the opposition has voiced its disapproval of the deal.

Odinga has said that the deal would be going against the president's commitment in reviving the sugar industry.

The back and forth between Jubilee and CORD about the issue took a turn for the worse, when the president publicly criticized Odinga, saying that Odinga's criticism over the deal had no basis.

Deputy President William Ruto also told off the opposition, saying that some individuals in the opposition were part of cartels who were against the deal beacuse they would loose out.

Ruto claims that  the cartels have been bringing in sugar into the country and passing it off as sugar from companies in Kenya.

Despite the government's assurance that the deal would be beneficial, the row is yet to died down.

Yesterday MCAs from Kakamega County gave the president an ultimatum of one week to withdraw the deal, or they would transport farmers to Nairobi and have them camp at the state house.
