What Uhuru told Raila at State House

President Uhuru Kenyatta has invited CORD leaders Raila Odinga and Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula for the Madaraka Day celebrations in Nakuru County.

During a meeting held at State House on Tuesday, the Head of State extended his invitation to the Opposition to counter a similar rally which CORD has planned at Uhuru Park on Wednesday.

“The President invited Mr Odinga and Mr Wetangula to the national Madaraka Day celebrations to be held in Nakuru County tomorrow,” a statement by State House Spokesman Manoah Esipisu read in part.

The statement from State House did not divulge further details on issues discussed or agreements reached during the meeting.

According to Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Spokesman Philip Etale, Odinga and Wetangula gave a condition for the invitation to Nakuru saying that they would only honour the call if their rally was allowed to proceed uninterrupted at Uhuru Park.

After the meeting, Wetangula stated that they had discussed issues affecting the country including the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and resolved to meet later for further talks.

Meanwhile, the High Court quashed a decision by the National Security Council to ban CORD from accessing Uhuru Park. The court instead directed police to provide enough security during and after the rally.

President Kenyatta invited the two leaders to a Luncheon in honour of visiting Korean Head of State then held a meeting with the two Opposition leaders in a bid to calm down the rising political temperatures.
