Why Owners of these Vehicles Could be Arrested - LIST

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has issued a stern warning to owners of 124 vehicles that are suspected to have illegally made their way into the local market.

According to a notice published in a local daily, the listed vehicles have outstanding tax issues and are suspected to have initially been declared as transit cargo but later dumped in the local market.

The affected owners were directed to present the vehicles for verification on Tuesday morning at the Nairobi Railways Club. In addition, they were ordered to produce the original ownership, transfer and importation documents of the vehicles.

The taxman warned that those who fail to voluntarily report to KRA within the course of next week could have their vehicles impounded as well as get arrested.

KRA Commissioner General John Njiraini urged the current registered owners of the cars to co-operate with the authority, in the move aimed at netting car dealers who have been evading tax.

“We are conscious that some of these vehicles may have already been sold to innocent unsuspecting customers and we are asking them to co-operate with our officers in the ongoing investigations,” Njiraini said.

The 124 recalled cars comprise of Sports Utility Vehicles and related luxury units.

The KRA suspects that some vehicle importers have been evading custom tax and illegally selling luxury vehicles to unsuspecting customers at car bazaars.
