Win For Teachers as Court Orders Salary Increment

Celebrations rented the air outside the Industrial Court in Nairobi as teachers welcomed a ruling that will see their salaries raised by 50-60 pc.

The basic salary increase will be effective immediately and backdated from July 2013.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has been given a period of four years to make the payments.

Present during the ruling were Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) officials, among them its Chairman Mudzo Nzili and Secretary General Wilson session.

The officials lauded the ruling calling it a liberation of teachers.

Sossion took to twitter with the news adding that they shall now focus on resolving the issue surrounding the NHIF deductions on teachers’ salaries which the union says are too steep.

Industrial Court Judge Justice Nduma Nderi ordered that the agreement between TSC and KNUT be registered with the court within 30 days.

According to The Nation, Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi says the ministry will work towards complying with the court’s ruling.

He however added that it will only happen if the ministry has the funds to facilitate the increment.
