9 Trucks Impounded After Aden Duale's Tip Off on Location of Contraband Sugar

Nine trucks suspected of transporting contraband sugar were impounded in Rongo, Migori county hours after Majority Leader Aden Duale named Menengai Oil godowns in Nakuru as among places storing millions of tonnes of the poisonous sugar.

County askaris were on high alert as they nabbed the trailers belonging to the company at a roadblock near Rongo town.

Migori county police boss Joseph Nthenge confirmed that the trucks were taken to the police station and the drivers arrested as they were reportedly taking the imported sugar to a miller in Homa Bay County.

"We will move to the next step after tying all loose ends in our probe," he conveyed.

Eyewitnesses stated that the trailers were being driven at a high speed.

Kevin Owino, a roadside vendor disclosed: "One of the drivers attempted to negotiate their freedom from the council askaris but they stood firm and called the police."

The crackdown came after Duale on Wednesday exposed the alleged big fish who were likely culprits in the recently exposed contraband sugar racket.

"West Kenya Sugar Company imported 34,600 metric tonnes. The same importer used Sukari industries and imported 34,000 metric tonnes duty-free.

"The same company used a company called Menengai refineries and imported 40,000 metric tonnes and another called Amnei was used to import 74,000 metric tonnes," the MP detailed.

In the ongoing operation, security officers on Tuesday seized 800 bags of suspected contraband sugar in Chuka town, Tharaka- Nithi County.
