Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has announced plans to provide poor households with a free National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) cover.
The new medical scheme will cushion vulnerable groups in the city to ensure that they get quality and free medical services in county hospitals.
He was speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony of Kihumbuini Stadium in Kangemi, Westlands Constituency on October 5, 2018.
“I want us to support President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Big Four agenda by offering accessible healthcare to the public,” he added.
The hospitals that will be involved in the plan include Pumwani, Mama Lucy, Mbagathi and Mutuini.
He also revealed that his government would fully implement a task force report that was filed, after the recent discovery of twelve bodies of infants at Pumwani Maternity Hospital.
He discredited rumours that it would be privatised, after the deal he made with Aga Khan University Hospital.
As a show that the Governor had taken particular interest in healthcare access, he has conducted impromptu visits to the county hospitals.
A report by Nairobi County Assembly Health Services committee revealed that Mama Lucy hospital lacked a new-born emergency unit, a general ward for women and up to three expectant mothers share a bed at the maternity unit.
