Uhuru's Cousin Reveals Reason Why She Had to Marry Young

Celebrating 61 years of marriage, a sprightly politician Beth Mugo and her husband Nicholas Mugo on September 15 treated the Crème de la Crème of the society to a celebration at their Kitisuru home in Nairobi.

Among the guests present included Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka, justice Njoki Ndung'u and a host of politicians who came to celebrate a milestone that many can only envy.

The start of the couple was in 1958 when Beth was only 19, and Nicholas 22, a relatively young age in these times.

The Standard newspaper reported on Sunday, September 22, that Beth Mugo and her husband decided to get married at such a youthful age owing to the strictness of Beth's parents.

"My father was very strict. He would say that he doesn't want the neighbors to say 'I saw Muigai's daughter standing by the road somewhere.' He always told us, 'If a young man is interested in you or you like him, invite him home," she reminisced.

This, she alleged, ensured that there was no courtship since the only chance they had together was in the confines of their home, under the watchful eye of their father.

Almost as soon as they had known each other, she intimated that he proposed to her and that she remembers the words, more than six decades later.

"He just told me that he loved me and that I was the only girl that he had ever loved. That was enough for me," she was quoted.

She further intimated that though the years have flown past them, she still sees the same man she married years ago in him today, even though both of them have hit the 8th floor (80 years).

The sentiments are echoed by their grandchildren who intimate that they have learned a lot from their grandparent's union.

A thirty-year-old granddaughter Wangu Nyachae was quoted stating that she wonders just how her grandparents have managed to stay together for that long.

She admitted that the two still spend time doing the things they love together, including dancing and taking long walks.

Beth attributes all the years that they have been together to God's grace and the understanding that they have created as a couple, despite the challenges.
