The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) on Friday, October 30, issued an advisory to motorists using the Lunga Lunga-Ukunda road.

In a statement, the authority confirmed that a section of the highway, at the Marenje area, had been flooded due to ongoing rains being experienced in various parts of the country.

"The section of the road is temporarily impassable. This has been occasioned by the ongoing heavy rains and construction works for a new box culvert," KeNHA warned.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution and try alternative routes including the Vanga-Shimoni Road.

Several road users noted that they got stranded on the road due to the flooding in the section.

"Thanks for this information, I almost got swept by the water," Ondijo Otieno noted.

The 460-kilometre road is a busy highway connecting Kenya and Tanzania at the Lunga Lunga border.

Earlier in the week, the weatherman urged Kenyans to brace themselves for heavy rains.

According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, the heavy rains currently being experienced are expected to continue in Western, Central (including Nairobi area), North Eastern, North Western and Coastal regions of Kenya.

The expected impact in case of spillage could also see the damage of water abstraction points on the river, including the Turkwel Irrigation Scheme, bridges and roads.

Since the onset of the rains in October 2020, most of the catchment areas have been receiving above-normal rainfall.

In April 2020, KeNHA was forced to close the Narok-Mai Mahiu road and advised motorists to use alternative routes as it embarked on repair works.

“Due to the ongoing heavy rains, approaches to Siyiapei Bridge, approximately 17Km from Narok towards Mai Mahiu have been severely undermined by floodwater, hence posing danger to motorists. The affected bridge is next to Maasai Mara Technical Training Institute," KeNHA in a statement.
