Former Minister of Justice and NARC Kenya Party Leader, Martha Karua is in Ghana as an election observer as part of the Commonwealth Observer Group (COG).
She was invited by the Ghana Electoral Commission to observe the polls.
The members are drawn from different backgrounds ranging from political, electoral, civil society as well as legal fields.
Other COG members consist of former Attorney General of Zambia, Musa Mwenye, Member of the House of Lords, United Kingdom, Baroness Denise Patricia Kingsmill and Chairperson National Election Watch, Sierra Leone, Marcella Samba-Sesay.
The group is headed by the former President of the East African Court of Justice, Emmanuel Ugirashebuja.
According to the group’s chair, the role of the observers will be to ascertain whether the elections will be effectively held to international and regional standards.
“We are here to observe the electoral process and will act impartially and independently as we scrutinize its organization and conduct. We will seek to assess the pre-election environment, polling day activities and the post-election period.
“We will then take a view as to whether it has been conducted to the international land regional standards to which Ghana has committed itself, including the country’s own laws,” Ugirashebuja stated.
This distinguished honor comes after Karua won a Ksh2.7 million in a recent court case where she had sued the Government over the 2017 Kirinyaga Gubernatorial elections.
She had moved to the East African Court of Justice in Arusha, Tanzania after she lost her case at the Supreme Court in 2019.
The court ruled in her favor and awarded damages for violation of her right to a fair hearing in the petition.
