In the 2017 elections, he emerged third behind Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga garnering 38,029 of the votes.

He vied as an independent candidate with his running mate Moses Marango.

Nyagah served in former president Daniel Moi's cabinet before quitting both the ministry and the KANU party in the run-up to the 2002 general election.

He was son of the late Jeremiah Nyagah, one of the ministers in Moi’s first cabinet.

In 2020, Nyagah was vocal in national politics contributing to the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report debate.

In a previous interview, he had said that the BBI should be implemented through parliament and a referendum.

The former Cabinet minister stated that key issues raised by the Bomas Draft were captured in the BBI report.

“The structure of the Executive should make all Kenyans feel they belong to the country. That is what 629 delegates at Bomas tried to do in Naivasha and Kilifi before the draft was diluted by a few people for selfish reasons,” he stated.
