Tejveer Rai, one of the sons of Kabras Sugar Company owner, crashed out on day two of the World Rally Championship (WRC) on Friday, June 25.

Rai did not suffer serious physical harm despite his VW GTI Polo rolling several times before it nose-dived at Kedong.

The accident leads to an automatic nullification.

Following the accident, Rai has been flown to Nairobi for a check-up.

In amateur footage seen by Kenyans.co.ke, shocked rally enthusiasts responded fast by returning the vehicle to its correct position and checking whether any of the crew members had suffered injuries.

Afterward, the onlookers moved aside to avoid an accident from any of the other rally vehicles which were still engaged in the rally.

Rai is a three-time Nakuru rally winner and is one of the drivers Kenya hoped would have given other nationals a run for their money.

Before participating in the championships, his vehicle had been rebuilt and tested. Rai had expressed gratitude to the government for allowing him to participate in the championship.

"It is a dream come true... The difference between the top cars and our cars is a big difference but all the same, we hope to show the international drivers that Kenya has some talent and maybe one day, one of our boys will get a chance to drive the big cars," he stated in a previous interview.

WRC released a spectator guide, urging spectators to exercise responsible behaviour in a bid to secure their own safety.

"Motorsports is beautiful sport, but without appropriate security it can easily become a dangerous hazard! Accidents with spectators are the biggest threat of this discipline," reads the statement in part.

The Ministry of Sports also discouraged groups of more than twenty people at any of the designated spectating zones along the circuit.

The Ministry also urged Kenyans to observe the Covid-19 regulation guidelines.

“All the Covid-19 protocols remain in place, nothing has been suspended. The rally takes place during the day, and We don’t expect multitudes of people congregating in Naivasha at night,” said CS Mohamed in a press briefing on Wednesday.
