Prior to the arrests, the police added that they got a tip from a member of the public who raised the alarm after noticing the 47- year- old suspect with a newborn baby.

“The husband of the suspect revealed that he wasn’t aware that his wife was pregnant until she appeared holding a day-old toddler that she wouldn't breastfeed,” read the statement in part.

Despite being caught, the 47-year-old insisted that the baby was hers stating that she had concealed her pregnancy from her family.

“Persistent that she had been pregnant, detectives took the suspect to Webuye County Hospital for forensic medical examination, where three different tests conducted gave negative results,” the DCI stated.

In order to be ascertain, the police further revealed that they had to conduct a DNA test to confirm the baby’s mother.

“DNA tests run at a different hospital in Kisumu equally contradicted the suspect's allegations,” read the statement in part.

It was at this point that the 47-year-old suspect revealed their well-orchestrated plan, disclosing that she had desired to have a baby.

“Thorough interrogations on the duo established that the 47-year-old had called the 67-year- old early in the year, asking her to find ways of getting her a baby," the DCI stated.

In their statement, the DCI further confirmed that the 17-year-old mother was reunited with her baby, adding that the duo was arraigned before the Webuye Law Courts on Monday, October 18 morning.

“Bond ruling will be made on Monday, October, 25. Meanwhile, further investigations are ongoing,” the DCI added.
