President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday, November 25, unveiled his nominee for the position of Chairperson of the Public Service Commission (PSC).

The Head of State had settled on Amb Anthony Mwaniki Muchiri for the position.

Members of the National Assembly will now proceed to vet him and give an approval or rejection depending on their findings on his suitability for the role.

The President declared the position vacant via a Gazette Notice on Tuesday, August 24, after the previous occupant of the office Stephen Kirogo passed away on May 14, 2021.

99 people applied for the position which was advertised in national newspapers including 73 men, 26 women and two persons with disability.

Out of the applicants, 25 possessed Doctoral Degrees, 49 had Masters Degrees, 26 held Bachelor's Degrees and 2 had National Diplomas as the highest academic qualifications.

Only 12 people were, however, shortlisted for the position. Muchiri emerged victories in the interview exercise that took place between Wednesday November 10, 2021 and Thursday November 11, 2021.

Muchiri has been serving as Kenya's Ambassador to Cuba since presenting his Letters of Credence to H.E. the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen in July 2019.

The chairperson is tasked with overseeing the commission whose functions include establishing and abolishing offices in the public service as well as appointing persons to oversee them.

The commission is also mandated with exercising disciplinary control and remove persons holding office. It is also mandated with investigating, monitoring and evaluating personnel practices in the public service.

PSC is managed by a board of eight commissioners and a Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

The office was first held, under the new Constitution, by Professor Margaret Kobia who served beginning December 2012 until her appointment the Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs in January 2018.
