A law enforcement officer was found shot dead following an attack that was staged inside a police station on Sunday, January 2.

In an incident that was reported by Corporal Peter Lolkireri, the deadly attack was executed when other officers had gone out for patrol in the Samburu area when they heard gunshots emanating from their post.

The police officer was reportedly tricked by Samburu morans who made their way to the post requesting drinking water. The officer proceeded to the water tank where he was shot dead.

The first officers to respond to the scene of the crime were Namunyak Conservancy rangers, who were patrolling the area and found the cop fatally injured and his lifeless body lying next to the water tank.

The tragic incident was also confirmed by a combined security team under the command of the area deputy OCS who visited the scene.

Preliminary investigations into the matter indicated that the attack was a revenge mission on the security officers following heightened operations in the area.

In the recent operation carried out by the multi-agency team, stolen stock from the morans was recovered while others escaped with gunshot injuries.

“He was out of the post about 200 meters searching for telephone network and other officers were on patrol within Namunyak area and its environs when he heard the gunshots emanating from the post,” the report read in part.

The report further added, "The officer proceeded to the water tank to give them water and it is at that time when he was fatally shot. On further inquiries, it was established that it was a revenge attack on security officers based in the region."

The body of the deceased was later moved to the Isiolo Teaching and Referral Hospital awaiting a postmortem examination.

Meanwhile, police have increased surveillance and patrols with the aim of nabbing and flushing out the perpetrators of the heinous act.
