Deputy President William Ruto's party, United Democratic Alliance (UDA), has cut its nomination fees for women and youth seeking elective seats by 50 per cent.
In a statement on Saturday, January 29, the National Elections Board (NEB) Chair Antony Mwaura noted that UDA had set the nomination fees while bearing in mind special interest groups such as People Living With Disabilities (PLWDs), women and youth.
Mwaura explained that PLWDs who are seeking elective seats on UDA will be not be required to pay the nomination fees.
“The board has waived nomination fees for all persons living with disabilities vying for positions within the party and approved a 50 per cent waiver for women and youth aspirants,” he divulged.
Mwaura stated that UDA will hold its nominations in April this year, adding that the process will be free and fair.
“The party does not have any preferred candidate and all aspirants starting from the top to the lowest will have to undergo through the set nominations,” the NEB Chairman noted.
Mwaura added that the board had taken note of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) gazette timelines and the just concluded amended Political Parties (Amendment) Bill of 2021 and will issue guidelines to the aspirants at a later date.
He also called for peaceful coexistence and campaigns, asking UDA supporters to maintain decorum in their engagement and respect their competitors.
UDA Secretary-General Veronica Maina noted that the National Elections Board (NEB) had convened in Naivasha to discuss plan for the party's nominations among other issues.
“The party’s national election board has been officially inaugurated and it’s keen to make sure that the nominations will be free and fair as we don’t have a preferred candidate,” she said.
