A police officer manning a police station was on Monday, January 31, killed by armed men while his colleague had briefly left the station in search of internet connection.

In a police report seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the police constable, stationed at Leruko Police post, was ambushed by bandits, who gunned him down during a night raid at around 7.20 p.m.

At the time of the attack, his colleague had temporarily left for the neighbouring school to access Wifi connection, while seven other officers had gone to run errands in Samburu Town.

“His colleague who was manning the post had gone to the nearby school to use Wifi,” read the report in part.

The bandits made away with two G3 semi-automatic weapons and over 50 rounds of ammunition they seized from the officer. Monday’s attack came barely a day after officers foiled yet another attack.

The officers were deployed to provide security for a lorry ferrying livestock from Moyale to Nairobi on January 30.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the ambush occurred at Malgis area in Samburu, where armed bandits attempted to steal over 40 herd of cattle in transit.

"The raiders opened fire at the cabin of the truck. The two gallant officers repulsed the bandits that sent them scampering for safety," the DCI stated.

On January 2, a police officer was found dead in a police post in yet another sporadic attack by armed gunmen believed to be Samburu morans.

In a well orchestrated plan, the morans made their way to the post, on the pretext of asking for drinking water. The morans allegedly opened fire at the gullible officer while he proceeded to help them fetch water.

Preliminary investigations into the matter indicated that the attack was a revenge mission on the security officers following heightened operations in the area.
