The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has summoned Murang'a Women Representative Sabina Chege over remarks she made at a rally in Vihiga County.

In a statement released by IEBC on Friday, February 11, it was revealed that the legislator was required to appear before the commission's Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee on Tuesday, February 15.

The statement by the electoral body comes barely a day after Chege made remarks regarding the victory of the Jubilee party during the 2017 General Election.

"Whereas the commission is seized of a report and material against yourself in regard to violation of clauses 6(a) and 6(I) of the Electoral Code of Conduct.

"You are hereby required to attend the Offices of the Commission at the Anniversary Towers on Tuesday, February 15 at 0900hrs in the forenoon for examination by the Electoral Code of Conduct," read the letter to Chege, signed by the Secretary, Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee.

After the Vihiga rally, there was an uproar on social media as Kenyans called upon investigative agencies to take action against the lawmaker so as to set the record straight.

Consequently, leaders allied to Deputy President William Ruto have castigated Chege for her sentiments even as they cautioned the electoral body against taking sides during the August 9 polls.

During a Kenya Kwanza rally in Nakuru County on Friday, February 11, Ruto rubbished the claims made by Chege stating that the Jubilee administration won the 2017 elections fairly.

"There is someone from Azimio who said that Uhuru and I rigged elections in 2017. I want to ask you the people of Nakuru, were your votes rigged? Did you not vote for us?

"We did not rig anyone's votes. The people of Azimio should stop threatening people with accusations of vote-rigging. I was in charge of the election and Uhuru did not rig anyone's votes," Ruto stated.

The DP also stated that they would ensure that the August 9 polls are free and fair and the outcome of the elections is not influenced in any way.

Chege is yet to issue a statement in response to the summon by IEBC or the sentiments she made at the rally in Vihiga on Thursday, February 10.
