Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Monday, March 14 nabbed a suspect inside an exam room during the administration of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) at the Kiamabundu Secondary School in Kisii County.

Speaking to the media, Kisii Central Police Station  OCPD confirmed  that the  20-year-old student from Kisii University was nabbed at the examination centre after he tried to sit the exam on behalf of a candidate who had registered to sit the exam.

Kimani revealed that the invigilators raised the alarm after they doubted the identity of the individual during the English Paper 1 of the KCSE exam that began on Monday morning after his image failed to match that of the duly enrolled candidate.

"The invigilator and supervisor nabbed the student whom they suspected was sitting the exam on behalf of a candidate. The suspect identified as Brian is a student at the Kisii University was sitting the English Paper 1," the officer stated.

The OCPD elaborated that the right candidate had registered as a private candidate and was being hosted at the exam centre. However, owing to rules that require students to register using passport photos, the suspect was smoked out.

"Consequently they informed the DCI officers and the police who acted swiftly to apprehend the suspect. Maina added that the college student was being questioned in the police station," he added.

Kimani revealed that investigating officers were piecing the evidence together and will charge the suspect for impersonation in court on Tuesday, March 14.

In addition, the OCPD noted that the suspect would serve as an example to anyone who attempts to engage in exam malpractices in the national test. He noted that a multi-agency team was working undercover to nab any individuals.

"I would like this to be a lesson to all those who think that they can cheat in this exam. We have a multi-agency team working undercover across the various examination centres who will fish out such individuals," Kimani noted.

Early Monday morning, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha pardoned two candidates from Nairobi County who tried to access the exam room with mobile phones.

Although he allowed them to sit the exam, he warned teachers and all officials overseeing the national test who had the intention to engage in malpractices that they would be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.

"This morning we have two cases of students with cell phones, but we shall allow them to take the exams. I want to warn any teacher who feels brave enough and opens the exam papers beforehand. We shall come for you," the CS stated.
