A new opinion shows that if elections were to be held today, Tuesday, May 3, the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance would win votes in the vote-rich county of Nairobi by a landslide.

The poll by Trends and Insights for Africa (TIFA) indicated that 41 percent of the city voters would vote for Azimio presidential flagbearer Raila Odinga.

Deputy President William Ruto was the second most popular candidate in Nairobi and would get 26 per cent. 32 per cent of those sampled indicated that they remain undecided.

In the county races, the Azimio candidates appeared to have a clear majority compared to their counterparts in Kenya Kwanza - except in the city gubernatorial race.

The poll by TIFA showed ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna led the race for the Nairobi senatorial seat with 19 percent support - followed by Kwanza's Bishop Margaret Wanjiru who got six percent.

In the case of the Woman Representative seat, the poll showed that incumbent Esther Passaris had the highest support with 27.8 percent followed by Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga who recorded 6.2 percent support.

In the gubernatorial race, Senator Johnson Sakaja leads with 23 percent, followed closely by Azimio's Polycarp Igathe who amassed 15 percent after recently declaring his bid to run for the county's top seat.

42 percent of the respondents supported the Azimio faction as the most popular coalition in Nairobi, followed by Kenya Kwanza's 22 percent.

The poll also ranked the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) as the most popular party with 26 percent support ahead of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) which had 22 percent. Jubilee came at a distant third with a paltry five percent.

TIFA also carried out the survey in Makueni and Mombasa counties in order to assess the political landscape. In the presidential race, Raila Odinga was perceived as the most popular candidate, by a huge margin.

The former Premier received 48 percent support in Makueni and 50 percent in Mombasa county. 32 percent of respondents showed support for Ruto in Mombasa county and 18 percent sided with the DP in Makueni county.

In the highly contested Mombasa Gubernatorial race, ODM's Abdulswamad Nassir dominated the polls with 40 percent while the Wiper party's aspirant Mike Mbuvi Sonko, a new entrant in the race, came second with 28 per cent. UDA's Hassan Omar received nine percent.

The findings included in the report were taken from the national survey TIFA Research conducted in April 2022.

As the General Election draws near, politicians from both factions will be looking to make inroads in order to sway votes in their favour.
