The Ministry of Mining through the Aquaculture Business Development Programme (ABDP) is looking to offer over 500 grants to Kenyans.
In a notice dated Tuesday, May 7, the Ministry called upon eligible Kenyans to make applications before May 22 at 11 am for a chance to be selected.
Per the notice, 390 grants will be awarded to Aquaculture Field Schools (AFS), 30 to Smallholder Aquaculture Groups (SAGs) and 145 to Aquaculture Support Enterprises (ASEs).
This program targets poor households that are involved in aquaculture in the 15 targeted counties. It aims to reduce poverty, increase food security and improve rural communities' nutritional status.
"To broaden and deepen the aquaculture value chain, the Aquaculture Business Development Programme (ABDP) will issue a number of competitive grants to various beneficiaries. These grants are a strategic component of the Programme’s Public-Private-Producer-Partnerships (PPPPs) approach," reads part of the notice.
Some of the targeted counties include; Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, Embu, Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Machakos, Kajiado, Migori, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Siaya, Kisii, Kakamega and Busia.
These counties are those with high aquaculture potential including concentrations of aquaculture activity, high production, existing infrastructure (processing, marketing and research), adequate water resources and marketing potential.
Through the grants, the Ministry aims to support the development of smallholder fish producers and small-scale supporting service producers in rural communities.
"The grants will prioritize climate resilience and environmentally sustainable forms of production, aligning with the Programme’s focus on climate-smart aquaculture," reads part of the notice.
