The Senate Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations is set to investigate the rising incidents of confrontation between officers of the National Police Service (NPS) and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

This follows a statement that was sought by Senator Samson Cherargei at the Senate on Wednesday, May 15.

In his statement, the senator raised security concerns over three incidents that had been witnessed by Kenyans in the last few months.

In particular, the Senator highlighted the confrontation of the security personnel at the Likoni Ferry which was captured and shared widely among Kenyans.

Cherargei also cited the arrest of KDF officers in personnel and a Nairobi incident where KDF roughed up a cop.

Therefore, the senator sought the indulgence of the committee, asking for a comprehensive report on the incidents.

Cherargei also indicated that the report ought to highlight the cause of the differences and disciplinary action that was taken against the officers.

"The committee should assess the level of risk the confrontation pause to the public and state disciplinary actions taken against the officers," he stated.

Following the move by Cherargei, Deputy Speaker Kathuri Murungi referred the matter to the committee.

Notably, after the Likoni altercation, KDF commenced investigations into the incident. At the time, the cause of the scuffle was not revealed.

However, KDF cautioned its officers to maintain professionalism at all times.

"This evening at the Likoni Ferry, KDF soldiers were involved in a scuffle that has been circulated through various social media mediums. To establish the circumstances leading to the incident, Military Police and requisite investigation agencies are currently handling the matter.

"The incident is highly regrettable. As KDF personnel, we are beholden to the core value of professionalism," read the KDF statement in part.
