Police in Kigumo Sub-County have made a breakthrough in recovering a stash of stolen police uniforms, targeting the misuse of official security gear.
Officers from Kangari Police Station, acting on intelligence, arrested a suspect found with several pieces of government-issued attire, including jungle trousers, a shirt with a corporal’s chevron, and a blue police jersey.
According to investigators, the uniforms are believed to have been stolen from a police station in Nyamira North, despite being recovered more than 180 km away.
The police have the suspects in custody as detectives pursue additional leads to establish how the government property was obtained and whether more individuals are involved.
The arrest comes after an incident in 2022 that was captured on CCTV footage in Matungulu in Machakos County, where suspects clad in police attire robbed a petrol station and locked the petrol station’s employees in the men’s washroom.
In a statement, the National Police Service emphasised that unauthorised possession of police gear poses a serious risk to public safety.
The police also noted that criminals often use such attire to execute robberies and other illegal activities while impersonating officers.
Authorities urged vigilance, calling on the public to report immediately any suspicious individuals seen wearing or transporting police uniforms without clear identification.
The National Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding government property, warning that those involved in stealing or trafficking official gear will face full legal consequences.
More details are expected as police continue tracing the route through which the uniforms were moved from Nyamira North to Murang’a.
