Several politicians allied to the broad-based arrangement are facing removal from lucrative parliamentary positions after backing opposition candidates in the recent by-elections.
According to Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, these politicians are expected to lose their parliamentary roles on Tuesday, December 2.
Among them is Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, who is set to be dismissed as the Majority Whip in the Senate after campaigning for DAP-Kenya's Seth Panyako in the Malava parliamentary polls.
Despite being a UDA lawmaker, Khalwale publicly drummed up support for Panyako in the days leading up to the November 27 by-elections.
Khalwale joined forces with other opposition leaders, including Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and DAP-Kenya party leader Eugene Wamalwa, to campaign for Panyako.
However, Panyako narrowly lost the by-election to his UDA rival David Ndakwa, who received 21,564 votes to Panyako's 20,210.
According to Cherargei, Khalwale joins the long list of UDA and ODM rebels who will immediately lose their parliamentary roles and face disciplinary action from their parties.
"There are our UDA MPs and those from the broad-based party ODM who supported our opponents in the by-elections. Tomorrow, we will begin the process of removing them from the leadership of the parliament," Khalwale said.
"In the Senate, we will remove the Kakamega senator from his majority whip position. Others will also be removed from the parliamentary committee leaders, both those in ODM and UDA, who did not support our candidates," he added.
Cherargei insisted that loyalty and discipline to the party were non-negotiable, warning of tougher times for broad-based leaders supporting the opposition side.
This comes despite the UDA and ODM parties securing all parliamentary seats in the by-elections held on November 27, including in Mbeere North, Malava and Banisa, which were won by UDA, while ODM won in Kasipul, Magarini and Ugunja.
The outcome of the by-elections has been largely considered a boost for President William Ruto in his 2027 pursuit, presenting a new challenge for the united opposition.
