The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has ordered the immediate closure of nine club lounges and restaurants in Nairobi, Kilifi and Kiambu counties for causing excessive noise pollution.
In a statement released on Tuesday, December 2, NEMA stated that the facilities had failed to comply with previous environmental restoration orders issued to them.
These include Kettle House on Muthangari Drive; Boba Drinks and Café in Kilimani; Bar Next Door in Kilimani; and Speedy’s Bar and Restaurant on Watamu Beach Road in Kilifi.
The others are Emirates Lounge in Pipeline Area; Infusion Lounge and Status Lounge, both in Ruaka along Limuru Road; and Kifaru Place, along Mombasa Road.
For the facilities to resume operations, they will be required to carry out an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) as well as obtain a fresh license from the authority.
The authority has further directed the clubs to install soundproofing in their premises to reduce noise pollution, as well as undertake a noise survey.
"Following the issuance of a public notice on noise pollution control on 18th September, 2025, NEMA has today issued a closure order to the following facilities for failing to comply with the requirements listed in the previous environmental restoration orders issued to them," the authority stated.
"The Authority has continued to receive noise complaints from the facilities even after being warned through earlier orders. The facilities are therefore directed to close immediately, undertake an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and obtain a license from the Authority," it added.
Series of Noise Complaints
The announcement comes two months after the authority threatened to close 107 clubs, lounges, bars, and restaurants in various parts of the country following a series of noise complaints.
In a statement on Monday, September 22, the authority ordered the establishments to submit at least five documents, including reasons why legal action or closure should not be taken against them.
Some of the other documents they are supposed to submit are the certificate of incorporation and list of directors /owners (CR-12), an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) licence for the facility, and the current Environmental Audit (EA).
The authority had also directed the establishments to detail noise pollution control measures they are putting in place.
