An unknown number of people have died after a tragic head-on collision between a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) and a trailer along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.

According to reports, the accident occurred on Sunday, December 7 morning, in the Masenyi area, near Voi.

The PSV was headed to Mombasa, while the trailer was heading in the opposite direction. Some sources claim that about seven people have lost their lives during the incident, but no official reports have confirmed this.

Photos obtained by Kenyans.co.ke show that the front of the PSV vehicle was destroyed, while the trailer sustained minor damage. After the accidents, both vehicles ended up off the road.

Following the incident, other motorists, police, and emergency responder services arrived at the scene to assess the situation and rescue the survivors.

Confirming the incident on Sunday, December 7, the Motorists Association of Kenya (MAK) blamed the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) for its reluctance to upgrade the busy highway into a dual carriageway.

"Kinatwa heading to Mombasa Head-on Trailer. Several travellers have died. Three people were reported to have survived with serious injuries. We blame it on KeNHA's 20-year lack of making the highway dual," MAK said.

The accident occurred two days after another crash on Friday, December 5, when a PSV vehicle overturned in Bumala, Busia County, claiming four lives.

According to reports, the accident occurred in the Wakhungu area of Nangina Ward in the Funyula constituency while the victims were travelling from Bumala town towards Port Victoria.

Images obtained by Kenyans.co.ke show the vehicle mangled, with residents coordinating rescue efforts at the scene with the help of local authorities.

According to Samia Sub-County OCPD Richard Moracha, the driver, a woman, and two men are among those who perished, while the other injured survivors were rushed to Nangina Mission Hospital for treatment.

Preliminary reports suggest that the vehicle experienced a burst front tyre, causing the driver to lose control.

Moracha, however, assured that security agencies have kick-started a probe to determine what exactly led to the accident.
