Several Dead, 8 Injured After Bandit Attack in Isiolo's Kom Village

At least 10 people have reportedly been killed and eight others injured following a fierce clash between herders at a village in Kom, Isiolo County.

Reports indicate that herders from Isiolo and Marsabit engaged each other in a deadly gun battle throughout Friday.

The clash is said to have begun at 5 am and lasted until 2 pm where more than 900 livestock were stolen.

According to the residents, herders exchanged fire that led to the deaths with both sides suffering casualties. They, however, noted that the Isiolo side lost more men.

The fight was sparked off by an attack by herders from Laisamis, in Marsabit when those from Merti went to Barchuma along the border of the two counties to pursue their animals that were stolen three days earlier.

The Kenya Red Cross confirmed the attack in a tweet stating: "Lives lost, 6 people injured following banditry attack in a village in Kom, Isiolo."

In February, more than 20 police officers were deployed in the volatile region to help the reservists enhance security.

This was after persistent attacks from the neighbouring counties that saw cattle herders killed and the Kom trading centre deserted for two years.

The conflict in the area has been attributed to the drought, land disputes and fight for pasture.
