President Uhuru Kenyatta Warns that People Caught Vandalising Standard Gauge Railway Will be Sentenced to Death

President Uhuru Kenyatta has issued a stern warning to people found vandalising the Standard Gauge Railway or any projects the government had heavily invested in.

On Wednesday while officially launching the SGR project, a tough-talking Uhuru warned that he would bring back the death sentence for economic saboteurs.

"I have never wanted to decree a death sentence upon anyone. You can remember that I reduced all death sentences to life sentences but this time we will not allow mediocrity from criminals.

"If you are caught in any act of vandalism regarding this project or any other, you will be sentenced to death and I will approve it," he said during the colourful event where he flagged off the first passenger train from Mombasa - Nairobi.

This comes just a day after five suspects were arrested on suspicion of tampering with SGR material and could now face the death penalty.

The Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko had earlier warned all suspects caught destroying sections of the railway, saying they would face severe charges.

The Head of State's sentiments should not be taken lightly and all those who intend to engage in any mischief regarding the SGR should be warned.

In 2016, Kenyatta signed documents commuting all death sentences to life jail terms.

At the time, 2,655 men and 92 women were removed from death row to serve life sentences.
