Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho Sues Hezron Awiti Over Billboards

With less than 40 days to the August polls, Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has moved to court to bar his opponent Hezron Awiti from mounting billboards in the county.

In his court papers, Joho accused Awiti, who is the MP for Nyali, of mounting his billboards without permission from the County Government.

On Wednesday, Awiti and Jubilee’s Suleiman Shahbal threatened to go ahead and mount their campaign material after Joho allegedly instructed advertising companies to deny them space.

Awiti tried to mount a billboard at Buxton after his first attempt on Tuesday was thwarted by police who pulled the campaign material down.

The Nyali MP was summoned by Principal Magistrate CN Ndegwa and will appear before the Mombasa City Court on Thursday to answer to criminal charges.

Shahbal on his part vowed to put up 20 billboards with or without permission of the County Government.

Joho has been accused by his rivals of using underhand tactics by preventing them from mounting billboards in the city.

According to the disgruntled opponents, Joho's billboards have dominated the coastal town at strategic points.
