Security has been beefed up at the Supreme Court as the National Super Alliance (NASA) moves to file a petition challenging President Uhuru Kenyatta's reelection.
Nairobi Police boss Japheth Koome confirmed that the police had been deployed to keep the city safe.
“All is well. There’s no cause for alarm. That’s all I can say,” he stated briefly.
Dozens of anti-riot police were deployed around the Supreme Court building to ensure crowds of supporters milling at the Supreme Court are kept at bay.
The NASA leaders are yet to arrive at the court.
Nonetheless, the Supreme Court announced that its registry will be open from 7 am to midnight on Friday (today) to allow time for filing of all presidential election petitions.
Esther Nyaiyaki, Supreme Court registrar, on Thursday, said similar accommodation will be given to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s team to respond to the petition(s) tabled.
Raila Odinga announced this week that his team would move to the Supreme Court to challenge the declaration of Kenyatta as president-elect.
