Joho Speaks on Registering New Political Party

Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho has responded to allegations by Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria that he, and his Kilifi counterpart Amason Kingi, had registered a new political party and were preparing to ditch the National Super Alliance (NASA).

The Mombasa county boss rubbished Kuria's claims, dismissing them as total propaganda.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke on Monday morning, Mombasa Director of Communications Richard Chacha stated: "If Joho and Kingi register a political party, they will say it, not Moses Kuria. That is total rubbish."

On Saturday, Moses Kuria took to social media to claim that the Opposition was about to break into five factions.

He alleged that the push for secession of the Coast region which the Governors had announced earlier in the week was part of a scheme to dump NASA.

Kuria stated: "Their secession talk is because they cannot lead an economic boycott in Coast lest they face the wrath of the Somali-Arab business interests in Mombasa and Malindi.

"They are preparing to jettison out of NASA and ODM and they have already registered a political party for this purpose," he added.

The region is largely a National Super Alliance (NASA) stronghold with a vast majority of elected leaders belonging to parties within the coalition.

On Friday afternoon, Coast NASA leaders led by Governors Joho and Kingi as well as Senator Stewart Madzayo, announced that the President Uhuru Kenyatta-led government had no moral authority to govern them following the October 26 election whose legitimacy they questioned.

"We, therefore, wish to announce the beginning of a consultative process towards secession of the coastal region," the statement read in part.
