Supreme Court Petition Filed Against Raila Odinga

A new petition was on Monday filed at the Supreme Court against National Super Alliance (NASA) leaders Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi, Moses Wetangula and James Orengo.

The petition was filed by the Institute of Democratic Governance through lawyer Njoroge Rugeru.

It seeks to have the opposition leaders held in contempt of court.

The petition wants the leaders held liable for impeding the electoral process, causing violence and destroying property.

On September 1st, the Chief Justice David Maraga-led bench nullified President Uhuru Kenyatta's win and ordered the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to conduct a fresh election within 60 days.

The majority ruling noted that the electoral process had been marred by 'Irregularities and illegalities'.

The opposition coalition, however, refused to take part in the repeat election unless their demands on electoral reforms dubbed 'Irreducible Minimums' were met.

They dismissed changes made by the electoral commission as inconsequential, maintaining that the system was rigged.

The repeat election took place on October 26th with President Kenyatta garnering 98% of the votes cast.

NASA insists that the Kenyatta-led administration is illegitimate and has announced the formation of a resistance movement.
