Former Laikipia MP Mathew Lempurkel Arrested

Former Laikipia North Member of Parliament Mathew Lempurkel has been arrested over alleged inciteful remarks.

Police boss Simon Kipkeu divulged that the former MP was taken in for questioning and is expected to be charged in a court of law on Thursday.

Lempurkel, who is not a stranger to police cells, is accused of making remarks which could cause violence while having a meeting with residents and locked at Nyahururu police station.

According to Kipkeu, Lempurkel allegedly incited local communities to turn against each other during a meeting he had convened at Mowarak trading centre on Monday.

Kipkeu, who is the Laikipia County Commander, noted that no one is above the law and the former lawmaker will face the music like any other Kenyan.

“We have enough evidence that he incited the communities to turn against each other. In fact, he particularly pointed out that the Samburus and Pokots living in the area must evict all the Kikuyus and Kalenjins for they had taken over their land,” Kipkeu stated.

“We have come out of a season where pastoralists have been invading private ranches in search of pasture. The former lawmaker is now taking us there. Private property must be respected and the government is there to make this happen” he added.

In 2017, Lempurkel was arrested for reportedly inciting members of the public to invade private ranches in Laikipia while attending a public rally.

Lempurkel was apprehended after a video that allegedly depicted him urging residents that white ranchers would be evicted if the Opposition took over the government in the August 8 polls.

On March 2017, he was also arrested following the murder of a British citizen, Tristan Voorspuy who was found dead with gunshot wounds at Sosian ranch, which he co-owned.
