Government Converts Colonial Prison Into Museum

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i on  Monday allowed the conversion of a popular prison into a historic site.

The CS during a meeting at Harambee House granted the possible relocation of Hola Prison as requested by Tana River Governor Dhadho Godana.

Hola colonial prison is where Kenya's first president Jomo Kenyatta was occasionally held by colonizers in the 1950s and shall now be reserved as a national heritage site.

Governor Godhana had appealed to the national government to turn the prison into a museum pledging his willingness to allocate alternative land for a correctional institution so that the current site which is rich in History can be let to maintain its status.

The move is inclined towards the Tana River County government's push to regain her glory as a hub for Kenyan History.

The late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, Jaramogi Odinga, and former Chief Justice Samuel Mutunga among several other freedom fighters were incarcerated at Hola Prison.

Dadho also eyes to boost tourism through conservation of a mass grave at the current Mau Mau memorial girls school in Hola township.

Several colonial fighters were buried in Hola after suffering in the famous Hola Massacre under the hands of the British colonizers.

Hola Prison was used as a remote punishment camp for 'hard core' Mau Mau fighter who refused to abandon the bindings in their oaths.
