A Nairobi County Assembly committee report laid bare details of the poor state of Mama Lucy Hospital.
The hospital on Kang'undo Road serves over a million residents on the Eastern side of the city.
However, the level four facility's bed capacity stands at only 112.
The mortuary is capable of accommodating only eight bodies.
Plans to set up a cooler able to handle 50 bodies were afoot but funds have not been allocated.
In addition, a room meant to be a classroom just metres away from the Maternity wing was converted to serve as the only male ward.
Power generators relied on in case of blackouts were also deemed unreliable.
“There are three theatres with inadequate staffing.
"In case of power blackouts, the theatres rely on power from a generator which keeps on breaking down and hence [it is] unreliable,” the report read in part.
The hospital's maternity unit handling 40 deliveries a day has only one gynaecologist with up to three mothers who deliver there sharing a bed sometimes due to congestion.
Many new mothers are discharged after eight hours and not the recommended twenty four, the report established.
The report was compiled following an inspection visit to the hospital by the committee led by Peter Warutere.
“There was no general ward for women, no functional ambulance at the time and there was low morale among staff due to allegations of incompetence, harassment, tribalism and nepotism by the top management,” the Roysambu MCA noted.
