Chaos at Kasarani as Kenya Faces Off Ethiopia for AFCON 2019 Qualifier

There were chaos at Moi Sports Centre Kasarani on Sunday moments before the crucial match between Kenya and Ethiopia.

Football enthusiasts and patriots thronged the stadium in support of Harambee Stars during the crucial African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier match.

Efforts by the government including the waiver of the entrance fee and free transport to the stadium saw the facility full to capacity which made the authorities to close the gates.

However, the thrilled fans remained adamant in their push to access the stadium forcing police to lob teargas.

Reports indicate that the fans had tried to force their way into the stadium through Gates 6, 3 and 12.

Kasarani stadium has a 60,000 seats capacity and the rallying call #JazaStadi (Let us fill up the stadium) seams to have bore fruits.

Harambee Stars players received a standing ovation from the fans when they made an acknowledgement appearance at the pitch  before the beginning of the match.

During their previous face-off on 10 Oct, 2018 in Addis Ababa, Kenya held Ethiopia on a 0-0 draw.

The government on Thursday announced that fans will be allowed free entry to the stadium as Kenyans held their breath for the team to secure the highly anticipated win.

Deputy President William Ruto visited the players at their training camp in Kasaranipledging to award Ksh50 million to the team should they beat Ethiopia to secure a slot in the 2019 AFCON.
