Rafiki Movie to Play in New Zealand's Parliament

Kenyan controversial movie Rafiki is set to play in New Zealand Parliament on Monday.

In a tweet, Rafiki Director Wanuri Kahiu stated that she would hold discussions with the lawmakers after the play.

The lesbian-themed movie had initially been banned by the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) before the court overturned the directive.

The controversial movie won an award six days ago during the 23rd annual Twist; Seattle Queer Film Festival.

The film bagged the audience and jury awards in the Best Narrative Film category.

According to Executive director of Three Dollar Bill Cinema Ben McCarthy, the two awards were the first honours the movie had received since it premiered in Kenya on September 23.

"We are thrilled that Rafiki won both the audience and jury awards for narrative feature and that we can bring further attention to this important, beautiful film from a country whose LGBTQ community faces rampant discrimination and fear of imprisonment," remarked McCarthy.

Wanuri's film, however, failed to make the cut for the Oscar nomination after losing out to another Kenyan movie SupaModo.

Despite the setback, Rafiki managed to generate Ksh 3.3 million in the one week it was accorded to be aired in cinemas within three cities in the country.

Rafiki's grossing for the week it ran, was the second highest since Nairobi Half Life.
