Former Vice President Moody Awori, Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju and former Cooperative Development Assistant Minister Linah Jebii Kilimo recounted the dreadful events of the plane crash that took place on January 24, 2003, killing one minister and two pilots.
According to KTN's feature story, then President Mwai Kibaki had just constituted his Cabinet and they had travelled to Busia County courtesy of Awori to celebrate their win.
The Jubilee Party Secretary-General narrated that when he boarded the plane, he found former Labour Minister, the late Ahmed Khalif, occupying his seat, forcing Tuju to seat at the back where he cheated death and escaped with injuries.
Had Tuju sat on the seat that had been designated for him at the front of the plane, it is he who would have died in the place of Khalif.
He commented further on how fortunate it was, that after the plane started its dreadful descent, it fell upon power cables which slowed the speed with which it fell, before crashing into a house.
"What was fortunate is that the electrical cables were able to slow down the plane and on that day, we were lucky that there was a power failure," Tuju narrated.
Linah Jebii Kilimo explained that she had no clue the plane had experienced mechanical hitches while taking off and woke up to find her friend, woman rights activist Wanjiru Kihoro unconscious.
"We were talking about how we grew up in Nandi, we then heard a loud crash and found ourselves upside down," Lina recounted.
Wanjiru remained in a coma for 4 years and later passed on on October 12, 2006.
The owner of the house which the plane crashed into, Charles Etyang, also revealed that his family missed death by a whisker as they had postponed moving into the house by a week.
