Thika Super Highway Blocked at Safari Park

The Thika Super Highway was on Thursday evening closed following riots at the Safari Park Hotel stretch.

Reports indicate that angry residents barricaded the road after a PSV vehicle knocked down a pedestrian.

In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the rioters used bricks to block the road near the Safari Park footbridge.

Drivers headed to Thika from Nairobi were forced to turn back as a result of the chaos.

The rioters blocked both the highway and the service lane although traffic headed towards Nairobi appeared to be flowing.

A section of netizens expressed dismay given that the accident appeared to have occurred a few metres from the footbridge.

The Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) is in the process of erecting four more footbridges on the busy Thika superhighway.

The new bridges are being built at Garden City, the Kenya School of Monetary Studies (KSMS), Witeithie and Mangu (Jomoko).

According to Transport and Infrastructure CS James Macharia, the construction of the four bridges is set to cost Ksh900 million.

The four additional footbridges are an addition to the 18 already on the highway and are set to reduce pedestrian accidents.

KeNHA also plans to construct social amenities –a bus stop, public toilets and mini stalls– that will be maintained by the contractor in charge of the highway.
