Government to Hire Nurses on Contract Basis

Vacancies of nursing resulting from natural attrition will be filled on a contract basis.

This is according to the National and County Governments, who discussed nursing issues on Monday at a summit held at State Lodge, Sagana.

Natural attrition is the reduction in staff and employees through normal means such as retirement and resignation.

During the summit, issues affecting service delivery amid perennial strikes were discussed in a bid to have a permanent solution to the striking nurses.

The Public Service Commission was asked to develop a standardised contract for engagement of the health sector staff including terms and conditions and SRC input incorporated.

Another issue discussed in the joint statement by Health Cabinet Secretary, Sicily Kariuki, and Council of Governor's chair Wycliffe Oparanya was disciplinary measures.

The officials also discussed that disciplinary proceedings would be instituted on nurses who failed to report to work on February 15, 2019, as ordered by President Uhuru.

Nurses went on strike on February 4, 2019, in a bid to air their grievances among them; better salaries, uniform and nursing service allowances.

President Kenyatta ordered the nurses to return to work and directed the Health Ministry and County governments to fire those who defied.
