One of East and Central Africa's most wanted robbers was arrested while trying to flee the country on Thursday.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) revealed that they pounced on the suspect, Ms.Margret Waithira Kamande, as she was about to board a flight to Dar es Salaam.
"Ms Kamande, who was being trailed by Detectives, was captured on several CCTV cameras breaking Apartments & offices within Nairobi," DCI tweeted.
Described as a very dangerous criminal, Ms Kamande was linked to several high-end break-ins within Nairobi, with the detectives revealing that she had been captured on several CCTV cameras during her heists.
DCI officers went on to reveal how they had been set up and assigned an entire surveillance unit on her all the way to the airport in order try and identify as many associates in her criminal network as possible, before making the arrest.
In most cases, according to the police records, the Ms Kamande would knock on the victim's door and then men would join her as soon as it was opened before robbing them of jewellery, cash, laptops and other valuable household goods
Ms Kamande was also linked to a robbery incident that took place in at the Blue Hut Hotel, Near Krunje House, Park Rd, Nairobi, that led to the death of a police sergeant who had been called upon to respond to the incident.
The DCI revealed that Ms Kamande was also wanted in Zimbabwe where she had skipped bail as well as several other countries in relation to similar criminal activities.
"She is also wanted by INTERPOL, Zimbabwe & other East African countries after she jumped bail which was granted by a Zimbabwean court in offences related to burglary and stealing. She had been on the run until her arrest," an excerpt of DCI's tweet revealed.
Back on March 12, 2015, a gang of three men and a woman (who is now suspected to be Ms Kamande) committed at least 20 robberies and shot a police officer in Nairobi, in a terror spree that lasted for one week ending at Blue Hut Hotel in Ngara.
Kenya Police spokesperson at the time, Zipporah Mboroki, said that the robbers targeted Lang’ata, Kilimani, Kileleshwa and Lavington neighbourhoods and would, in some cases, pose as workers from water or electricity companies.
