Sonko Makes 3 Pledges to Parents After School Caved in on Their Children

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Monday, September 23, made three promises to the parents of Precious Talent School in Dagoretti South, where a two-storey classroom caved in on pupils.

Seven pupils are confirmed to have died in the incident with 64 being taken to Kenyatta National Hospital for treatment.

Through his Facebook account, the county head condoled with the parents who had lost their children after the classroom collapsed

"I am deeply saddened by the news of the accident that occurred this morning at the Precious Talent School in Ngando area, Nairobi. I wish to convey my heartfelt condolences to the parents, guardians, teachers, pupils and the entire school community on the tragic loss," he stated.

Sonko assured the parents that he would offer personal support and that of his administration in laying to rest the departed children. He further promised to assist the families financially in footing the cost of treating of the injured.

This is even though the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) board chair, Nicholas Gumbo, had assured parents that the facility would not charge them. 

Sonko also promised to take part in the reconstructing the school to ensure minimal interruption to learning at the institution.

The governor noted that the inspection and approval of primary and secondary schools falls under the Ministry of Education. 

"I, therefore, wish to offer my personal commitment to work with the Ministry of Education and all relevant national government departments to ensure that such an incident will never occur again," he added.

He stated that he would ensure the impunity, he said was spearheaded by the planning department, was reversed as well as demolishing the illegal structures in the county.

"As a government, we shall also pursue the prosecution of any official who shall be found culpable in these violations that have continued to cost human life, while endangering many more lives," he stated.
