President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday, December 8, donated Ksh3 million with a promise to send Ksh4 million more to aid in the construction of the St. Francis of Assis Parish Church in Ruiru, Kiambu County.
Reports from the President's Strategic Communication Unit (PSCU) on Sunday indicated that the president, who was attending mass at the church made the donation to help in the completion of a new church block that would accommodate 2,000 congregants when completed.
The move by the president, which is more associated with Deputy President William Ruto, went a big way in aiding the efforts by the church to realize the project which had been going on for more than a year.
Reports from PSCU indicate that the construction of the new church building at a cost of Ksh65 million began in October 2018 and so far, the church has managed to raise Ksh40 million.
The church leadership, which was elated by the generous gesture from the president, were confident that they would be able to bridge the deficit through similar fundraising engagements and wellwisher donations.
President Kenyatta, after handing over his donation called on the country's leadership and citizens to come together and wage a war on endemic corruption.
“Please, let us not politicize the war on corruption. When an individual is stealing public resources he doesn’t do so on behalf of his family or community. Therefore, anyone who is implicated should carry their own cross,” the President told the congregation.
He also insisted that all institutions mandated to lead the war on graft would not be interfered with and that everyone would be presumed innocent until proven guilty in the court of law.
“As a nation which observes the rule of law, we should allow our institutions mandated to deal with corruption to do their work independently and ensure all suspects are treated equally,” said the President.
The mass was attended by acting Kiambu Governor James Nyoro among other national and local leaders.
