A 36-year-old woman was on Monday, February 1, arrested for allegedly blocking her children from attending school on grounds that education is demonic.

The police arrested Esther Njeri, a mother of two who hails from Nanyuki, for withdrawing her children from school on flimsy grounds. Esther holds two degrees; one in Commerce and another in Accounting.

She is alleged to have barred her two children, a 13-year-old girl in Form 2 and an 8-year-old boy in primary school from going to school.

Neighbuors reported that she had been warning friends and family that the world is about to come to an abrupt end, and asking hem to repent their sins and seek salvation.

The area chief discovered that Esther's children had not reported back to school following an operation to trace school-going children who were still being held at home.

Esther who equated her salvation journey to that of the Biblical Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, claimed she was ready to face the law.

Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang issued a circular earlier in the year ordering security officials to trace children being held at home after the re-opening of schools amid reports of students not reporting to school. Headteachers were also ordered to submit attendance registers to sub-county directors of education.

A number of cases have been reported of parents barring their children from reporting back to school and this is an issue the ministry is addressing. Serious causes of action are being taken on parents caught.
