Local communities and indigenous people who are interested in tree planting were encouraged to apply for the funds.

The money will not be disbursed to individual persons but through organized associations.

“Local communities and indigenous peoples organized through civil society organizations, community forest associations, or forest-dependent communities are encouraged to submit proposals for the grant,” a statement from UNDP read.

Requirements

The proposal must show innovative and transformative ideas on how to promote forest and land use sector.

UNDP is keen on scaling up afforestation and reforestation and landscape restoration programs as well as increasing productivity of plantation forests.

The funding comes at a time when the Kenyan government has rolled out plan to combat climate change through planting of trees.

“We are going to plant 5 billion trees in the next five years and another 10 billion trees in the next ten years.

That is going to contribute significantly to the fight against desertification and the challenges that come with climate change," Ruto announced during a meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
