Elders Abstain from Sex to Appease 'Angry' Tree Allegedly Planted by Kenyatta

A group of Kikuyu embarked on a nine day sex starvation period starting Wednesday, over what they claim is the start of a process to carry out a ritual to appease an angry Mugumo tree.

This process is said to have been prompted by the breaking of one of the big branch of the tree which according to the elders' Chairman Harrison Waithaka, signifies that the tree is 'angry' and feels 'molested'.

The tree which is considered sacred and untouchable is claimed to have been planted by Kenya's first President Mzee jomo Kenyatta.

It is said that the tree located at the Red cross compound in Dagoretti area, Nairobi lost one of its branches on Tuesday.

Unaware of the traditions associated with the tree, locals within the compound began to harvest timber from the fallen branch, prompting an old woman to alert the community elders.

The elders who arrived at the scene with a sheep without blemish, warned that the tree was angry and could fall leading to deaths adding that a cleansing ritual had to be done to calm the tree down.

According to the elders the 9 days abstinence from sex is to allow for investigations on whether the tree is used for prayers or not.

The elders have said a sure indication that the tree is sacred will be if the person who cut the tree's branch dies within the nine day period.
