Girl Burns After Prayer Session Goes Wrong

A 12-year-old girl is nursing serious burn injuries at Nakuru level 5 Hospital after attempts by religious leaders to drive out evil spirits went wrong.

Clerics from Mowar Israel church are reported to have been using kerosene and fire to conduct prayers on Caroline Awuor, whose long ailment had been attributed to evil spirits, when she caught fire during the exercise.

According to Awuor's brother, the men of the cloth instructed his sister to take in kerosene while sprinkling some on her body during the exorcism session.

The preachers then surrounded Awuor holding lit candles, when one of them who had kerosene in his mouth spat towards her leading to the accident.

Awuor incurred burns on her face, while the religious men fled from the home after realising the damage they had caused.

Members of the victim's family are now demanding for the arrest of the 'men of God'.

The incident comes at a time when the Government plans to enforce regulations aimed at rooting out fake preachers who have been taking advantage of Kenyans.
