Girl 'Sold' to Matatu Driver at Sh20 000

Police have launched a manhunt for a matatu driver in Laikipia County after it emerged that he allegedly accepted to marry a Form two girl and even paid Sh20,000 as dowry to her parents in December.

The girl, who was at Limunga Secondary School, was said to have been good in her studies as well as sports, but had to stop schooling to become a wife.

“Chepkurui (the victim) showed a lot of effort and commitment in her education and in sports while in school, action should be taken on both the parents and the alleged husband,” said the headmaster, Njoroge Motoru.

Mr Motoru said the matter had been reported to the area Chief and the police, but action was yet to be taken on the parents or the alleged husband.

Police, however, said that parents of the girl, who was barely 18, had escaped after learning that they were being searched for.

Early marriages are said to be a major problem in the County, pre-dominantly occupied by the Maasai community.Earlier on, Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu had promised to give cows to parents who educated their children till completion as an effort to fight the vice.
