Government Overthrow Announced In Burundi As President Attends Summit

A top Burundian General has announced through the State radio station the dismissal and overthrow of President Pierre Nkurunziza's government.

According to a report on BBC the radio broadcast by Gen Niyombareh reads…."The masses have decided to take into their own hands the destiny of the nation to remedy this unconstitutional environment into which Burundi has been plunged.

"The masses vigorously and tenaciously reject President Nkurunziza's third-term mandate... President Pierre Nkurunziza has been relieved of his duties. The government is overthrown."

Major General Godefroid Niyombareh has further announced that a national salvation committee has been set up to run the country.

President Nkurunziza is said to have sacked Major General Niyombare as the Central African nation's chief of intelligence the Daily Mail reports.

Crowds of people who had earlier been out on the streets of the capital protesting against the president are now cheering and celebrating his apparent dismissal.

The announcement by General Niyombare comes hours after President Nkurunziza arrived in Tanzania to join other East African heads of state for a special summit seeking to find a solution on the weeks long crisis that has rocked his Country.
