Journalists Protest Nation Media's Firing

The Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) has reacted to Thursday's Nation Media Group sack notice issued to a section of employees.

KUJ threatened to take legal action against the media house if it failed to withdraw the notice alleging that the move was unlawful.

On Thursday, NMG announced that it was shutting down QTV and scaling down its traditional radio businesses in Kenya and Rwanda

NMG regretted that the move would result in a reduction of the workforce but insisted that the process will follow the law.

However, KUJ claims that the media house did not consider the rights of employees as constituted under Section 40 of the Employment Act. This section provides a procedure required when carrying out a redundancy in an organisation.

"It is important to note that it is not the Employees who have become redundant but it is your institution," the journalists said.

The giant media house stated that it was embarking on implementation of a new strategic direction that would ensure that it secured current business and positioned itself to win in the future.
