Judge Accused of Receiving Sh 50M Bribe to Manipulate Case

A High Court Judge has been accused of receiving a Sh50 million bribe in the controversial Sh5.6 billion Tatu City land case.

The allegations were brought to Chief Justice Willy Mutunga's attention in a letter written by one Wilfred Gitonga on behalf of a group called 'Kenyans for Clean Justice'.

The letter stated that two influential individuals are trying to manipulate justice and take control of the contested land.

The group claims that the 'influential persons' obtained documents from the registry and sent a file to a particular Judge whom they bribed to rule in their favour.

“The same judge has been at the beck and call of the two and has granted them interim orders and rulings in their favour no matter how ludicrous their application is,” the letter dated August 25 stated in part.

The contested Tatu city land is part of a 240 billion shillings urban development project, in Kiambu, that has attracted both local and foreign investors.

The project consists of residential, commercial, industrial, tourism, social and recreation amenities.

It is alleged that Stephen Jennings (founder and lead investor) and Frank Mosier (lead investor) teamed up with the three Kenyans on a 50-50 shareholding in the project in 2008.

The deal degenerated into a court battle after the three Kenyans allegedly laid claim to the project and attempted to throw out their foreign partners.

Mr Gitonga of the Kenyans for Clean Justice challenged CJ Mutunga to investigate and take action.
